Research: Dr. Angela Moe

Dr. Angela (Angie) Moe is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Chair of Sociology at Western Michigan University (WMU). She also holds a formal affiliation with the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at WMU. She earned a BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1996), a MS in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1998), and a PhD in Justice Studies, Law and the Social Sciences from Arizona State University (2001). She is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Holistic Health from WMU, with specialization in healing through movement.

Dr. Moe’s scholarly interests have always been in the areas of gender, women’s studies, feminist theory, and qualitative research. Within these areas, she has researched and published over 20 works on the topics of intimate partner violence, victimization help-seeking, women’s criminalization, and most recently, contemporary women’s use of bellydance/MED. These may be found in such academic journals as Violence Against Women, Women’s Studies Quarterly, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Women and Therapy, Women and Criminal Justice, and Criminal Justice Studies, as well as several edited anthologies and academic encyclopedias. She has presented at over 30 academic conferences, recently traveling to Barcelona, Spain for the International Sociological Association World Forum. She is a member of several academic organizations, including Sociologists for Women in Society, Midwest Sociological Society, and Congress on Research in Dance. Finally, she is a proud member of the West Michigan School of Middle Eastern Dance, performing as part of both Le Souk and Tribal Corps.
